KOZHIKODE: The district-level celebrations of the golden jubilee of the State's formation got off to a colourful start at Mukkom, near here, on Wednesday. Nineteen grama panchayats participated in the procession that began from Agasthyanmuzhi, near Mukkom. Tableaux, dance forms, women dressed in traditional Kerala attire and schoolchildren led the procession. The procession ended at the Mukkom bus stand. Minister for Forest Benoy Viswom inaugurated a public meeting that kicked off the 50-day long celebrations in the district. The celebrations will conclude at Koyilandy on December 20. Mr. Viswom said the memories of thousands of those who had raised the slogan of `United Kerala State' continued to be held in high esteem by the people of the State. The State Government would take forward the achievements of the State, besides eliminating the drawbacks, the Minister said. U.C. Raman, MLA, presided. District panchayat president K.P. Kunhahammedkutty distributed the prizes. P.M.A. Salam, MLA, and A. Jayathilak, District Collector, were among those who spoke. Various cultural programmes were held after the inaugural function. A film festival, folk arts festival, drama, seminar and cultural meeting will be held on November 2 and 3. Twenty-six films, 20 Malayalam and six non-Malayalam films will be screened. The Malayalam films will be screened at Abhilash and PC theatres at Mukkom, Rose theatre at Agasthyanmuzhi and Sarigama theatre at Karassery junction. G. Aravindan's `Chidambaram' will be the inaugural film of the fete. Entry to the festival is free.
