Student killed in accident

KasarAgod: A twelve-year-old boy died after falling off his school bus on Wednesday. The boy, Hrishikesh, fell off when he tried to open the door for his friends. The child died on the way to the hospital. He was a student of the Ambika English medium school in Palakunnu. — Staff Reporter

Dharna to be staged

KOZHIKODE: Children afflicted by blood-related diseases and their parents, under the aegis of the Blood Patients Protection Council Malabar Zone, will stage a dharna in front of Medical College Hospital (MCH) here on Children's Day on November 14 to press their demand for judicial investigation into complaints relating to the death of thalassaemia-afflicted children. In a press release here on Wednesday, Kareem Karassery, council convener, said there was an urgent need to appoint specialists in blood-related diseases at the MCH , among others. — Staff Reporter

Foundation stone to be laid

KOLLAM: The Palathara Sri Durga Bhagvathi Temple plans to construct a Sree Narayana Guru Deva Mandiram within the temple complex. Head of the Sivagiri Math Prakashananda Swami will lay the foundation stone for the mandiram at 8 a.m. on Friday. — Staff Reporter

SFI clash

PATHANAMTHITTA: Three policemen attached to the Pathanamthitta police station were injured following a clash between the police and a group of Students Federation of India (SFI) activists who allegedly barged in the police station here on Wednesday. SFI acting district president R. Manu was taken into custody in the afternoon after he allegedly manhandled a constable on duty at a traffic island .

Prime Minister leaves for New Delhi

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh returned to New Delhi from here on Wednesday evening after his brief Kerala visit. He was seen off at the airport by Governor R.L.Bhatia, Chief Minister V.S.Achuthanandan, Mayor C.Jayan Babu and Chief Secretary Lizzie Jacob, among others. Defence Minister A.K.Antony, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Law Minister M.Vijayakumar, MPs, MLAs, Principal Secretary for General Administration E.K.Bharat Bhooshan and District Collector N.Ayyappan were also there to bid farewell to the Prime Minister. — Special Correspondent

Aid sought

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, on Wednesday, urged the Prime Minister to provide assistance from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund to the next of kin of farmers who committed suicide in Kerala. In a memorandum to the Prime Minister here, the Chief Minister said he had learned that families of farmers in other States had received ex-gratia payments of Rs.1.5 lakh each. However, the families of victims in Kerala had only received assistance of Rs.50,000 from the State Government. So, the assistance from the Prime Minister's fund should be released urgently, he said. — Special Correspondent

Civic bypolls THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Byelections to 18 wards in 15 grama panchayats, two block panchayats and a district panchayat will be held on November 4, State Election Commissioner P. Kamalkutty has said. The votes will be counted on November 6. Mr. Kutty said in a release here on Wednesday that candidates should submit their statement of expenditure before December 6. Commission Additional Secretary P. Jayaprakash would be holding additional charge of the Secretary. Election to the post of the Idukki district panchayat president would be held on November 3. Election to the vice-president's post in Ayarkunnam grama panchayat and president's post in Manjoor grama panchayat would be held on November 3, Mr. Kutty said.

CAT web site

Kochi: The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has opened a web site. The website gives an introduction to the Administrative Tribunal Act, Rules and Orders, different types of forms being used for filling cases. The site has daily case lists, which enable the advocates and litigants to know the posting of their cases before the bench. The web site has the provision for browsing the judgements pronounced by different benches of the tribunal. The internet protocol address is www.cgat.gov.in.

Centre's stance hailed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The General Insurance Officers' All India Association has hailed the Union Government's stand that the health insurance scheme for BPL families can be implemented only through public sector insurance companies. Association State vice-president P.P. Mohanan said the State Government should implement the scheme through public sector companies.

Cultural activist dead

THRISSUR: Cultural activist Hameed Manissery died here on Wednesday. He was 64. Mr. Manissery who hails from Mannur, near Kozhikode, was in the city for the past couple of days to attend the International Film Festival of Thrissur (IFFT). He was spotted lying unconscious in the toilet of the Regional Theatre, where the IFFT screenings were on. Even though he was rushed to the district hospital by the festival organisers he breathed his last before admission. Mr. Manissery was actively associated with the theatre and film fields.
