Thiruvananthapuram: The All-Kerala LPG and Tank Trucks Workers' Coordination committee has withdrawn its indefinite strike from October 30, following a settlement reached at a meeting convened by Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas late on Wednesday. The strike was in protest against the alleged harassment by motor vehicle inspectors. It was also decided to drop the cases charged against the truckers for not carrying fire-fighting certificates.
Tough measures
The Government on Wednesday announced that it would seize and operate the vehicles that had gone off the road in response to the call for an indefinite strike by private bus and lorry operators. Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas told reporters here that Chief Minister V.S. Achuthandan would hold a meeting with the striking transport operators on Thursday to resolve the stalemate on the use of speed governors in heavy vehicles. A monitoring committee headed by the Chief Secretary had been constituted to keep a tab on the situation arising out of the State-wide strike. At the district- level, Collectors had been directed to keep a tab on the situation. Mr. Thomas said police escort would be provided for private vehicles willing to operate services. The KSRTC would increase the number of services in north Kerala.
