Call to fight anti-people policies

Special Correspondent

Chennithala seeks support from all

  • Says it is Congress' destiny to fight Left parties led by CPI(M)
  • Says UDF will continue to perform its duties as creative Opposition

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala has said the CPI(M) and the Left parties are the main adversaries of the Congress in Kerala.

Talking at the KPCC special convention here on Wednesday, he sought the help of all quarters to fight the anti-people policies of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government.

Mr. Chennithala said that it was the Congress party's destiny to fight the CPI(M)-led Left parties and history designated it to be so. Contemporary politics also dictated that the fight continued. The United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Congress party's contribution to the development of the State were indelible.

Mr. Chennithala thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for announcing a special package for Kerala farmers who were in distress.

Mr. Chennithala also congratulated Defence Minister A.K. Antony who, he said, was a role model and a proponent of transparency and value-based politics.

Mr. Antony, in his address to the convention, said even though he had taken up assignment as Defence Minister, he proposed to ensure his presence in Kerala politics. He promised to extend all assistance to enable Kerala get its due from the Centre.

Union Minister for Overseas Indians' Affairs Vayalar Ravi said the Congressmen in Kerala had the inherent strength to face any challenges. He said the LDF Government would search for an escape route to cover up its failures. It would find fault with the Centre for all its lapses and this had been its practice since 1957.

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy called for a farm care policy to effectively address the crisis that the farm sector was facing. AICC general secretary Veerappa Moily urged Congressmen to work towards bringing the Congress back into reckoning.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his speech said he had entrusted the Defence portfolio to a person with integrity and who was an inspiration to all. The country, he said, was safe in the hands of the UPA.
