HASSAN: Regretting Maharashtra Government's recent petition seeking transfer of Marathi-speaking areas such as Belgaum to that State, Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna said here on Wednesday that despite Mahajan Commission's recommendation on the matter, the neighbouring State was flogging a dead horse time and again. Because of the peace-loving nature of Kannadigas and their lack of pride for their language, the geographical boundary of the State was shrinking, he added. He called upon people to be vigilant and safeguard the land, culture, language and water that belonged to the State. Addressing a gathering to mark the golden jubilee celebration of the formation of State, at the Pre-University college grounds, he said it was because of conviction of former Chief Minister D. Devaraja Urs that the State was renamed Karnakata in 1973. A colourful parade by the police, National Cadet Corps and school students, presentation of folk art and tableaux of various government departments and organisations marked the occasion. Hassan MLA H.S. Prakash, Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda, Superintendent of Police Panduranga H. Rane and Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat F.R. Jamaadar were present on the occasion.
Honoured
Mr. Revanna honoured six persons - H.B. Madana Gowda (culture), J.R. Ravikumar (journalism), Raju Gorur (sports), Y.S. Veerabhadrappa- (social service), Hemakshamma (literature) and M. Mahadev (theatre) on the occasion for their contribution to their respective fields. Davangere Staff Correspondent reports: S.A. Ravindranath, Minister for Sugar and Rural Water Supply and the district in-charge, said the coalition government was committed to the comprehensive development of the State. At the Rajyotsava Day celebrations here on Wednesday, Mr. Ravindranath said Karnataka was unique in many ways and it had made a mark on the world map because of IT and BT. The Government had been making all efforts to get classical language status to Kannada, he said. An action plan had been prepared to develop Davangere as a tourist destination at a cost of Rs. 28 crore, the Minister said adding that the Government would soon sanction the amount. He stated that vast Soolekere tank in Chennagiri, Pushkarni in Santhebennur, Uchangidurga Fort, Kondajji Tank and Anegod were some of the places that were proposed to be developed under the programme. Five government employees Rudresh of Davangere Zilla Panchayat, Panduranga, Gurumurthy, Nagaraj and Shankarappa were honoured on the occasion. Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi, acting Chief Executive Officer of Davangere Zilla Panchayat Rudrappa, and president of Davangere ZP Chidanandappa participated in the celebrations.
