MADURAI: Diagnosis of animal diseases in southern districts is set to become easier with the Animal Husbandry Department establishing a Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory here. The laboratory, situated on the department premises near the Gandhi Museum, has been constructed at a cost of Rs.28 lakh. It will be inaugurated soon. The laboratory will benefit at least five southern districts Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar. K. Kaja Mohideen, Assistant Director in the Animal Husbandry Department, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the laboratory came up with financial support from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). He said the facility would help in carrying out diagnostic tests for all animal diseases in Madurai itself. Now the samples were sent to the Central Referral Laboratory in Chennai. "It will be very useful when there is an outbreak of diseases among animals. We can do tests here and know the results early," Dr. Kaja Mohideen said and added that the State Government had sanctioned additional manpower for the laboratory. The district has an Animal Disease Intelligence Unit that anticipates diseases and carries out intensive surveillance.
