Kasaragod: Minister for Health P.K. Sreemathy has called for freeing the State from the threat of epidemics and finding a solution to accumulation of garbage. She was inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of united Kerala in the Municipal Town Hall here on Wednesday. The Minister said the State was facing challenges in all sectors, especially in ushering in development to make life more comfortable. For this, the Government and the people needed to work hand in hand. She said the Government was considering the idea of setting up an airport in Kannur and a nursing college in Kasaragod. C.T. Ahmedali, MLA, presided over the function. District panchayat president M.V. Balakrishnan gave the welcome address. P. Karunakaran, MP; K. Kunhiraman, P. Balan, K.V. Kunhiraman and C.H. Kunhambu, MLAs; municipal chairperson Befathima Ibrahim; and District Collector N.A. Krishnankutty were present. To commemorate the jubilee, programmes spanning 50 days has been set in motion by the district administration.
Black Day observed
However, the Kannada linguistic minorities held a protest at the Collector's office and the Karnataka Samithi (R) observed a black day. The activists submitted a memorandum to the Collector to be handed over to the Chief Minister. K. Narayana Gatti, an activist, said, "It has been 50 years since Kasaragod was carved out of Dakshin Kanara [now Dakshina Kannada] and merged with the State of Kerala.
