MARKING AN EPOCH: People's representatives and officials releasing doves at a cultural rally held as part of the State's golden jubilee celebrations in Malappuram on Wednesday.

MALAPPURAM: The Golden Jubilee festivities of Kerala's formation began here on Wednesday with the civic bodies joining hands with the district administration and volunteer organisations, schools and colleges to take out a mass cultural rally through the town.

Malappuram's MLA M. Ummer, district panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed, District Collector K.S. Premachandra Kurup, Police Commissioner Tarun Kumar, municipal chairman Kiliyamannil Yakoob and a large number of people's representatives from the district, block and grama panchayats were in the front row of the rally.

Chelakkodan Aysha, State Literacy Mission's octogenarian brand ambassador from Kavanur in Malappuram district, was in the forefront of the rally when it approached its last leg. She, along with others in the front row, released a dove to mark the beginning of a 50-day programme for the Jubilee.

Ms. Aysha was honoured at a function held later at Municipal Town Hall. A variety of entertainment programmes, including oppana, duffmuttu, kolkali, folk dance, thiruvathirakkali and group dance followed the inaugural ceremony.
