Four arrested; explosives seized

Staff Reporter

NIZAMABAD: The Makloor police recovered a huge quantity of explosive material after arresting four persons -- Kashi Kannaiah, M. Venkataiah, Sivaratri Lingaiah and Sivaratri Iddaiah -- on Wednesday.

Disclosing details at a press conference here, Deputy IG, Anjanikumar said the police, during a routine vehicle checking at Dasnagar on the outskirts of the town, found a person carrying a bag on suspicious circumstances on October 28.

When they searched the bag they were found 100 electrical detonators in it. In the interrogation he revealed his name as Bathula Oddaiah of Gundaram village in Nizamabad mandal. He said he had purchased them from Kashi Kannaiah of Vannel village in Nandipet mandal.

Following this, the police raided Kannaiah's residence and arrested him. As he said he purchased explosives regularly from one Venkataiah of Suryapet in Nalgonda district, the police prepared a plan and trapped Venkataiah when he was selling 300 detonators to Kannaiah.

Based on the revelations made by the accused, the police apprehended Lingaiah and Iddaiah at their native place Nandipet and recovered 1900 gelatine sticks, 450 detonators and two compression tractors from them. It had also come to light that the duo had been unauthorisedly using the explosive material for Gutpa lift scheme construction.

Mr. Anjanikumar said the police were investigating the alleged involvement of sight engineers and contractors of the Gutpa scheme for allowing unauthorized and unqualified persons to use explosives to blast construction material.

Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Chandra was present at the press meet.
