CHENNAI : A research and development centre to promote student projects and activities was inaugurated recently at Sakthi Mariamman Engineering College. The centre, named after Homi Bhaba, was declared open by S. Mathivaanan, Project Director, gun control systems division, Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE), Avadi. College chairman K.N. Ramchandran and Principal K. Vijaya Bhaskar Raju recalled the work of Dr. Bhaba who was an inspiration for President A.P.J Abdul Kalam and said their dreams should encourage young minds to dare and dream more new ideas and develop products and services that can help mankind in general. Later, professors and students presented some of the projects being pursued actively. Prof. H. Ranganathan explained the need for a simpler method to estimate Haemoglobin content in blood, using a simple embedded system. Prof. G. Elangovan spoke about smaller and efficient microchip antenna systems for mobile systems. Prof Sanjay Sahu talked about the critical need for development of alternative sources of energy and pointed out the difficulties encountered in developing an efficient solar energy harnessing system. He spoke about the efforts being made by his team to increase the efficiency of solar panels. A final year student Ravi Shankar Chaturvedi detailed the lacunae in the ticketing systems of metropolitan buses and how a smart-card based technology developed by him could be used to overcome them. After the inauguration, Mr. Mathivaanan urged the students to consider taking up a career in premier research and development organizations of India such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the like.
