Protect Chennai's water sources, teachers told

CHENNAI:
The United Nations Advisor for the Habitat, G. Dattatri, has urged the teaching community to protect Chennai's water sources by involving students.
Addressing a training programme for teachers on `humane education' here recently, he identified 20 water sources including the Kosastalaiyar and Araniyar rivers that required immediate care. It was the teachers who should be first aware of Chennai's environmental assets, he added.
The Vice-Chairman of the Animal Welfare Board of India, V.N. Appaji Rao, said that humans were supported by the animal and plant kingdoms, and it was our duty to protect them.
A.R. Shanthilal Nahar, Vice-President, Karuna International; Geeta Jaikumar, Director, BWC, Chennai; and K. Sathyabama, Vice-Patron of Karuna Club, spoke.
The programme, conducted by Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar, and the Animal Welfare Board of India, was inaugurated by Ashok Kumar Mehta, President, Karuna International, Chennai.
A total of 42 teachers from various schools participated. The schoolchildren presented a play on the need to protect forests.
