Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM: An infant was abandoned by her mother a couple of hours after she was born at the Chromepet GH more than a week ago. The girl, born on October 24, is at present under the care of staff at the hospital. Officials said a woman who gave her name as Gayathri got herself admitted on October 24. When asked where her husband and other relatives were, she replied that she came alone as she was in intense pain and that her relatives would come soon. The woman delivered a health baby girl weighing 3.75 kilos.

She left the ward under the pretext of making a phone call to her relatives. When she did not return, hospital staff complained to the Chromepet police. It was found that the woman had hired an autorickshaw to Pallavaram from where she boarded a bus to Poonamallee.

The address she had given the staff was fake, police said. The baby will be handed over to the Social Welfare Department, officials said.
