Buses burnt in Delhi

Buses set on fire, other vehicles damaged in attack


  • Five held for arson in Jagatpuri
  • Protesters block Vikas Marg and pelt stones at the police

    NEW DELHI: Five buses were set on fire and several other vehicles were damaged in violence by protesters across the Capital on Wednesday, the last day of the three-day Delhi bandh called by the traders against the sealing drive. Five persons were arrested and over 350 detained.

    The Delhi Fire Service said it received four calls about protesters setting buses afire. The first incident took place near Durgapuri Chowk, where a Delhi Transport Corporation bus was set ablaze around 12.15 p.m. About an hour later, another bus was set on fire at Jagatpuri in East Delhi, while the protesters set fire to another DTC bus near Mother Dairy.

    According to the Fire Service, it received the fourth call at Subhash Nagar Mor near Tihar Gaon around 1.30 p.m. Attempts were also made to set a bus afire at Maujpur in North-East Delhi.

    The agitators smashed the windowpanes of several vehicles, including buses. In many places they stoned buses and smashed the panes with rods while the passengers were inside. Four buses were damaged at Geeta Colony, while some others were damaged at Noida T-point, Noida Link Road, Laxmi Nagar on Vikas Marg, Gandhi Nagar Chowk and Pandav Nagar. Three Municipal Corporation of Delhi trucks were also damaged near Swarna Cinema at Krishna Nagar in East Delhi.

    Protesters blocked Vikas Marg and also pelted stones at the police. According to the police, incidents of stone-pelting were also reported from West Patel Nagar, Ganesh Nagar in Shahdara.

    In East Delhi, the police arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in the Jagatpuri arson. Most of those detained were released later.
