Rights panel seeks report on fire accident

HYDERABAD: Taking suo motu notice of a report published in these columns on the fire accident that occurred at Meena Jewellers in Punjagutta on October 21, the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission registered a case and asked the Fire Services Department, Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad and Commissioner of Labour to submit a report by December 29.

Expressing concern over the safety of persons working in the building, the Commission sought to know how such an accident could occur if the authorities took proper steps to check deficiencies on the premises. The Commissioner also wanted to know as to what action was initiated against the management and steps for rehabilitation of dependents of the three persons who died in the fire accident.
