Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding waiver of the interest on loans taken by small and marginal farmers owning less than one hectare of land. The memorandum sought a special farm package for Idukki and Alappuzha districts and urged the Centre to take the initiative to convene a discussion on the Mullaperiyar dam issue involving Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The memorandum said that raising the water level of the Mullaperiyar dam from 136 ft to 142 ft would have serious implications. The UDF leaders met at the office of Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy in the morning to give a final touch to the memorandum. The UDF wanted the Centre to consider extending the National Rural Employment Guarantee programme to all districts in the State. It wanted the Centre to formulate a farm loan policy that envisaged loans at the rate of 4 per cent interest for all farmers with land below two hectares.
