VISAKHAPATNAM: Acquisition of more land is proposed for the special economic zone (SEZ) coming up in Achyutapuram and Rambilli mandals of the district for accelerating industrial growth, according to Commercial Taxes Minister Konathala Ramakrishna. Addressing the State Formation Day celebration at the Collectorate here on Wednesday, he said work was going on at a brisk pace on the SEZ proposed in 9,200 acres. For the displaced, Rs.240 crores had been paid so far. The Government had released another Rs.15.5 crores towards payment of compensation. It is proposed to acquire 8,056 acres more for the SEZ, the Minister said. Among the other ongoing projects were the expansion of the steel plant, the Gangavaram port work, Pharma City at a cost of Rs.276 crores and the apparel park. Eastern Naval Command's alternative base in 5,000 acres and atomic research facility in 2,600 acres were also proposed in the district. Giving top priority to irrigation in the Jalayagnam programme, Pedderu reservoir was inaugurated and it would provide ayacut to 19,969 acres by the next kharif, Mr. Ramakrishna said. Modernisation of medium irrigation projects on Tandava, Raiwada and Konam was proposed. Under the third phase of land distribution 6,200 acres would be distributed. So far, 36,721 acres had been distributed benefiting 19,469 persons.
Water supply
Schemes taken up to improve drinking water supply in Parawada and Payakaraopeta were completed by spending Rs.10 crores and another Rs.38 crores would be spent in Munagapaka, Parawada, Kasimkota, Devarapalli, K. Kotapadu, Chodavaram and Anakapalle mandals. To provide better medical care, the KGH was being modernised with Rs. 25 crores and Rs.20 crores of the Rs.50 crores sanctioned for Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences was released. As a part of women empowerment, 11,800 self-help groups were provided loans.
