VIJAYAWADA: With the downpour continuing on Wednesday, people breached canal bunds and roads in many villages to prevent inundation of their houses and farm fields. Over 1,000 houses were damaged in Mangapuram village near Challapalli, while rainwater entered the telephone exchange in Kuchipudi. Farm fields were submerged in Puttagunta, Jonnapadu, Tulasivaripalem, Aravirala and Kuripirala villages in Nandivada mangal. Water entered 22 villages in Gannavaram mandal and 60 houese in Nidumolu. Inampudi drain was in spate.

A bridge on Pasamkodu drain at Kodali village partially caved in, owing to which vehicular traffic between Vijayawada and Avanigadda came to a standstill for a few hours. The police, with the help of local farmers, restored the bridge.

Krishna district Collector Navin Mittal inspected a few relief camps. He said special officers were appointed in all rain-affected mandals and rescue operations were going on in low-lying areas. Nagayalanka was cut off from the rest of the district till Wednesday evening.

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited provided free telephone facility for the public in rain-affected areas. The Wireless in Local Loop System phones were installed at Naveen General Stores in Nagayalanka (08671-200301), Telecom centre in Avanigadda (08671-200302), and at Mallavilli village (08672-200499) and Tummalapalem village (08672-200300).
