Prime Minister's promise on Bench

Thiruvananthapuram: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said here on Wednesday that the Central Government would consider the setting up of a High Court Bench with filing powers in the State capital. He gave the assurance to a delegation of the Trivandrum Bar Association, which met him at the Raj Bhavan to hand over a memorandum urging the Centre to concede the long-standing demand for a High Court Bench. — Special Correspondent

Police stop

Thiruvananthapuram: The Rural police on Wednesday issued an order stopping the marriage of a minor girl scheduled to be held in Balaramapuram on Thursday. The order was issued as per the provisions of the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929 on the basis of a compliant filed by B. Sandhya of the Human Rights Law Network. The police verified the school records of the girl and found that she was only 16 years old. . The police were investigating the girl's parents and the workers of a social organisation, which issued the "pathrika" for the marriage, in connection with the incident.
