KOCHI: Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar has called upon industries to adopt practices of self-regulation. Industries could be categorised on the basis of their performance pertaining to safety, he said while inaugurating a three-day meet on safety and occupational health professionals organised by Department of Atomic Energy here on Wednesday. Dwelling on the concerns raised from various quarters on environment, he dispelled the notion that the environment would remain the same in the absence of development activities. "Too much of activism and too little expertise will not solve the problem", he said. He advised the agencies concerned to conduct environmental impact assessment in a proper manner. K.K. Usha, former Chief Justice, Kerala High Court, in her address on the theme `legal aspects on safety, health and environment,' said the traditional concept that development and ecology were opposed to each other was no longer acceptable.
