Colourful start to golden jubilee fete

Hundreds of people take "united Kerala pledge"

KOCHI: Hundreds of people participated in the celebrations marking the golden jubilee of united Kerala at Aluva manalpuram on Wednesday.

A procession highlighting the achievements of the State during the last 50 years marked the beginning of the district-level celebrations. The cultural procession began from the Aluva palace at 4 p.m.

Tableaux depicting the progress made by the State in various fields were presented. Representatives of political, voluntary and other organisations participated.

Nearly 50 prominent personalities from various walks of life lit lamps placed around a huge map of Kerala at Aluva manalpuram.

Film directors, cultural personalities and elected representatives joined hands to celebrate the occasion.

Hundreds of women in traditional attire added glitter to the celebrations.

They converged at the manalpuram to participate in the inaugural function of the 50-day jubilee celebrations.

Hundreds of people took the "united Kerala pledge" after the procession reached the banks of the Periyar in the evening.

Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma inaugurated the celebrations at a public meeting at Aluva manalpuram.

Minister for Public Works T.U. Kuruvila was the chief guest. Elected representatives, including MPs and MLAs, attended the function. Several artistes participated in cultural programmes.
