dated November 3, 1956: UN call for ceasefire

The UN General Assembly, at a special session on November 2, voted overwhelmingly the US resolution expressing grave concern at British, French and Israeli military operations in the Suez Canal area and calling for an immediate ceasefire. The resolution urged all sides to withdraw behind the armistice lines, to desist from raids across the armistice lines into neighbouring territory and to observe, scrupulously, the provisions of the armistice agreements. An Egyptian spokesman at the UN headquarters declared that Egypt considered herself to be "in a state of war" with Britain and France. In Cairo, it was announced that all navigation in the Suez Canal had been stopped following the sinking of an Egyptian naval frigate by Anglo-French aerial bombing.
