dated November 3, 1956: Hungary quits Pact

Hungary has informed the UN of its withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact and urged the Big Four powers to guarantee its neutrality. In a message to the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, it announced its withdrawal from the Soviet-sponsored pact, declared its neutrality and expressed its belief that the Big Four would guarantee this neutrality. Meanwhile, the Hungarian Premier, Mr. Imre Nagy, has sent a telegram to the Soviet President, seeking immediate negotiations for withdrawal of Soviet troops from Hungary.
