COLOURFUL: Tarshito's work "In Transformation".
Gallery Nature Morte has mounted an exhibition of contemporary works of Italian artist Tarshito made in collaboration with Indian artisans and crafts persons at A-1 Neeti Bagh in the Capital. Titled "Offering", the exhibition has on display works ranging from large-scale sculptures to several styles of paintings and fabric tapestries. Tarshito has developed a complexsystem of personalised iconography stemming from his meditation practice. The iconography is then elaborated in numerous mediums and styles in collaboration with other artists. Most of the works included in the exhibition were first exhibited in January 2006 as part of the Jaipur Heritage International Festival at the Jawahar Kala Kendra Museum in Jaipur. Three styles of paintings are on view -- miniatures from Bikaner, Madhubani paintings from Bihar, and Patachitra paintings from Puri. The artist has also collaborated with non-government organisation Dastkar to create tapestries of quilted and embroidered fabrics. In all the works, Tarshito's characters, symbols and allegories illustrate a world in which man and nature exist in harmony, where divine enlightenment is manifest. The artist has held several exhibitions of his works throughout Europe and a solo exhibition of his works made in India was held at the Crafts Museum here in 2001. He is based in Italy with studios in Bari, Rome and Milan. The exhibition is on up to November 11. -- Madhur Tankha
