VIJAYAWADA: Officials of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) are making efforts to offer the latest version of Wireless in Local Loop (WLL) in the city soon. They have taken it up with Chief General Manager of BSNL AP Telecom Circle R.K. Arnold during his recent visit to the city. The officials have informed Mr. Arnold about the potential for WLL phones in the city, considering a large number of users wanting to have the benefits of Internet in addition to various other features.
Unlimited access
Using a type of equipment called ZT, the latest WLL services are already being offered in rural areas in tune with the BSNL's objective to serve far-flung areas. These WLL phones have a feature to give high-speed Internet connectivity at 144 kbps. The connectivity offered here is unlimited and the monthly rental comes to Rs. 250. General manager P. Balagangadhara Rao says there is a good demand for the new version of WLL services and they are pursuing the matter actively. "This will require new towers to be installed in different parts of the city. We will provide these services sooner than later," he says.
Varied functions
The present WLL connections in the city are of old version and the equipment used is Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited. This has no features of Internet or fax, while the users are looking for multifarious functions. The latest ZT equipment has been given in Bandar, Gudivada and 13 other towns in the district and the officials are satisfied with the response from the rural users. The main switching centre located in the city is being used to cater to WLL phones offered in rural areas only and in future this will be extended to the city users also. The proposal to offer latest WLL services here has been included in this year's plan itself with the matter being under active consideration by the circle office. There are six towers in the city as of now providing services to the old WLL phones.
