VILLUPURAM: Minister for Higher Education K. Ponmudi on Tuesday handed over compensation of Rs. 50,000 each to flood victims here. Among the victims was Kuppammal, who lost her daughters Saraswathi (6), Sandhya (4) and Sharmila (2), in the floods. She received a cheque for Rs. 1.5 lakh. After giving away the cheques, Mr. Ponmudi told reporters that the inundation of residential areas would be addressed by constructing an underground drainage system.
Students drowned
M. Mayavan and R. Manthiri, hailing from Vengayakurichi, drowned in a check-dam on the Kalrayan Hills. As schools had declared a holiday on Monday, the boys, both aged seven, went to have a dip in the check-dam. They did not know swimming and drowned. The Kariyalur police have registered a case. The bodies were taken to the Kallakurichi Government Hospital for post-mortem. In another incident, V. Tamilaruvi (2) drowned after slipping into a pit near awater tap at Gunamangalam colony in Mayilam block. Residents of the area had dug a pit to lower the tap level so as to get more water. The toddler fell into the pit, which was full of water due to the rain, and drowned. The Mayilam police have booked a case.
