BJP wins bypolls in Madhya Pradesh

Bags Vidisha parliamentary seat and Malehra Assembly seat

BHOPAL: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has won the byelections to the Vidisha parliamentary constituency and Malehra Assembly seat in Madhya Pradesh.

The Vidisha seat was vacated by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan while Bharatiya Janshakti Party president Uma Bharti quit the Malehra seat when she left the BJP and formed her party.

State Minister Rampal Singh won the Vidisha seat by defeating Rajshri Singh (Congress) by over 73,000 votes. He polled 2,58,263 votes against the Congress nominee's 1,73,175. Raghunandan Sharma of the Bharatiya Janshakti Party came third with 1,37,354 votes.

In Malehra, Kapurchand Ghuwara (BJP) wrested the seat by a margin of 4,490 votes. He polled 38,779 votes against Bharatiya Janshakti Party candidate Rekha Yadav's 34,289.Jagdish Shukla (Congress) was third with 20,183.The BJP was confident of its victory in Vidisha but its victory in Malehra came as a moral booster as the segment was considered Ms. Bharti's home turf.

In the Vidisha parliamentary election, the BJP candidate led by a comfortable margin in the Udaipura Assembly segment which he represented in the Assembly, and also in Budhni — the Chief Minister's Assembly constituency.

Congress retains Talsara

The Congress retained the Talsara Assembly seat in Orissa's Sundargarh district, giving a jolt to the ruling Biju Janata Dal-Bharatiya Janata Dal alliance.

Prafulla Majhi of the Congress defeated his nearest rival and BJP nominee Sahadeb Xaxa by a margin of 2574 votes. Mr. Majhi, a medical practitioner, bagged 44,391 votes, while Mr. Xaxa got 41,817. Ten contenders were in the fray and Mr. Majhi emerged victorious despite the presence of a Congress rebel.
