MADURAI: A tribunal headed by Delhi High Court Judge A.K. Sikri completed its sittings in Tamil Nadu this week to adjudicate on the extension of the ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The ban was extended for two years on May 14, 2006. Justice Sikri held the sittings in three places in the State during August and October this year. While there was no representation from the LTTE, the Union Government was represented by senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs. A. Davidson Devasirvatham, Superintendent of Police, `Q' Branch, represented the State. Highly placed police sources told The Hindu here on Thursday that the officials explained the necessity to extend the ban.
Under the mandatory provisions, the extension of a ban on any organisation has to be adjudicated by a tribunal within six months of the imposition. The tribunal will convey its decision to New Delhi.
