FAMILIAR SIGHT: An overcrowded autorickshaw at Thirumangalam on Thursday.
CHENNAI:
The accident that killed 18 persons near Kancheepuram on Tuesday has forced the Transport department to take a re-look at the seating capacity in autorickshaws.
Officials will soon write to manufacturers, asking them to reduce the seating capacity.
In the Thirumalpur accident, the autorickshaw was overcrowded when it got stuck in the track at an unmanned level crossing. The Motor Vehicles rules say autorickshaws can carry only three persons other than the driver. But some models have extra space. This allows overloading.
The authorities will also make it mandatory for autorickshaws to carry a board clearly stating the seating capacity and the warning against overloading.
Commuters say that they are forced to use autorickshaws as public transport is undependable.
