CHENNAI: The announcement of industrial policy later this year will renew the Government's commitment to economic development, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Thursday. The State wanted a "healthy growth of both manufacturing and service sectors," he said and added that though it was the manufacturing sector that provided "significant employment" to people here, the service sector had emerged as a "major player" in providing employment. Stressing the need for development to have a human face, he said growth in the economy must also mean growth in job opportunities. "Development of local communities through skill training, sharing business opportunities and widening choices available to them are our common goals," he told members of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) here. Mr. Karunanidhi made it clear that development of infrastructure was a priority. He detailed many ongoing projects, including the Sethusamudram project, expansion of port facilities, and said that these were possible because the Central and State governments worked together. Transparency in decision-making, an investor-friendly attitude, quick response to investment proposals and proactive initiatives of the State Government were the reasons for investment proposals "pouring into Tamil Nadu every day." "This needs to be sustained. I have, therefore, announced setting up of an Industrial Task Force under my Chairmanship," he said.
FICCI president Saroj Kumar Poddar, released the FICCI `blueprint for growth and Tamil Nadu Vision 2011,' prepared by the FICCI Tamil Nadu State Council.
