ONGOLE: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has assured flood-hit farmers that their loans will be rescheduled and fresh loans sanctioned. As he was going from Karamchedu to Swarna by bus, farmers greeted him with damaged paddy crop. Addressing them, Dr. Reddy said that the Government would not spare any efforts to mitigate the hardship caused to farmers. He said that compensation of Rs. 750 per acre, with a limit of 2.5 acres wet land and five acres of dry land, would be provided. He said that the compensation was 25 per cent more than what was paid to them before.
Highest rainfall
The Government would also provide seed on subsidy. He said all efforts would be made to help farmers get insurance for the damaged crop. District Collector B. Udaya Lakshmi said that Karamchedu received highest rainfall of 550 mm in the last four days followed by Perchoor 520 mm and Chirala 490 mm. As the drains could not discharge the heavy inflows, paddy fields were submerged. Some villages were waterlogged. She said Kommamur canal suffered 169 breaches and Romperu drain, Ipurupalem and Vetapalem straight cuts could not cope with the deluge in the catchment areas. Nearly 38,000 persons, who left their inundated homes, were provided food and shelter in 83 relief centres where 18 medical camps were organised. Preliminary reports said that 182 colonies were inundated and 13,355 houses were damaged. Seventy-five teams were constituted to enumerate losses.
