Landslips disrupt NMR service

Heavy rain in Mettupalayam, mud houses collapse

COIMBATORE: Landslips at eight places between Kallar and Hillgrove stations forced the cancellation of Nilgiris Mountain Railway service between Mettupalayam and Coonoor on Thursday.

This sector has been hit often by landslips since the North-East Monsoon set in last month.

The service from Coonoor to Udhagamandalam was not affected.

In one of the landslip-hit areas, a nine-ft heap of boulders, mud, bushes and broken branches of trees occupied the tracks. Heavy rain impeded work to clear these and restore the train service.

Elsewhere in Mettupalayam, more than 40 km north of Coimbatore city, heavy rain flooded residential colonies, brought down mud houses and also washed away the tar surface of a road at Maniyakaramkadu.

Tree uprooted

A tree got uprooted on the Mettupalayam-Coimbatore Road near the post office.

Four persons travelling in a car had a narrow escape when their vehicle was caught in water flowing over a causeway at Uppupallam near the Vanabhadrakaliamman Temple.

Escape

Passengers of a bus helped the four get out of the vehicle and also bring it to a safe place.

Another car and its occupants escaped from getting washed away on a causeway on the Kothagiri Road.

The washing of the newly-laid tar surface of the road at Maniyakarankadu brought the Mettupalayam Municipal Chairperson K. Satyavati, Commissioner A.P. Pannerselvam and other municipal officials to the spot.

Officials said 90 mm rain from 8.30 p.m. on Wednesday night till the early hours of Thursday pounded the town and the outskirts. Rainwater flowing from the mountains inundated villages.

Mettupalayam MLA O.K. Chinnaraj and municipal officials visited Maniyakarankadu in the evening after a fresh spell flooded residential areas.
