Probe into

Muringoor incident

Thrissur: Human rights activist P.D. Joseph has lodged a complaint with the Prime Minister's office against the police having allegedly harassed AIDS patients while inspecting the Divine Retreat Centre at Muringoor on September 30 following a Court order. The Prime Minister's Office has directed the Chief Secretary to inquire into the allegation, according to a press release issued here on Thursday by Mr. Joseph. — Staff Reporter

Protest meeting

Thrissur: A meeting was held on Wednesday at the Thrissur Press Club in protest against a news photographer having been manhandled allegedly by a sub-inspector. The photographer complained that he was manhandled after he clicked photographs of the sub-inspector allegedly assaulting an aged vagrant near the District Hospital here on Tuesday, the meeting said. The meeting passed a resolution demanding disciplinary action against the sub-inspector. A complaint has been lodged with Deputy-Inspector General Harinath Mishra. — Staff Reporter

Super bumper lotteries planned

Thiruvananthapuram: The Government has decided to conduct two super bumper lotteries for mobilising funds to the Chief Minister's Calamity Relief Fund and for the comprehensive development of the sports sector. The former will be held in March and the latter in January. — Special Correspondent

Kodiyeri should go, says BJP

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP spokesman B.K. Sekhar has demanded that Kodiyeri Balakrishnan voluntarily relinquish the post of Home Minister in the light of the incident involving the Prime Minister's convoy on October 31. Addressing a press conference at the party's State committee office here on Thursday, he said that every time something major happened the Home Minister would say that the Government was taking it very seriously. However, nothing concrete happens. One thing that does happen is that senior police officials appear on channels and act like action heroes on the silver screen. — Staff Reporter

RSP seeks firm action

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: RSP State secretary T. J. Chandrachoodan has urged the Government to take stern action against the transport operators and solve the serious difficulties being experienced by the travelling public. In a statement here on Thursday, Prof. Chandrachoodan said there was no justification for the strike as the Government had taken all steps possible to address their grievances relating to installation of speed governors. The transport operators appeared to be planning to hold the Government to ransom and achieve their ends. — Special Correspondent

Water level increases

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The water level in major reservoirs in the State has increased slightly. According to figures released by the Central Water Commission for the week ending October 30, at Idukki the level increased from 2,375 ft to 2,375.89 ft, and at Kallada from 380.02 ft to 381.50 ft. However, at Idamalayar the water level decreased from 551.48 ft to 550.39 ft. But when compared to the water level recorded during the same period last year, the Kallada and Idamalayar reservoirs showed an increase of 11.83 ft and 4.79 ft respectively and Idukki a decrease of 16.67 ft. — Staff Reporter
