Two Punjab dental colleges may be de-recognised

Majority of the faculty posts in these institutes are vacant

"Students are suffering due to acute shortage of staff"

AMRITSAR: The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association has expressed fears about de-recognition of two government dental colleges in the State by the Dental Council of India as a majority of the faculty posts in these institutes are vacant.

Deputation

PCMS (Dental) Association State secretary Puneet Girdhar told reporters here that about 88 faculty posts were sanctioned in the Government Dental College, Amritsar, and Government Dental College, Patiala, but only about 25 posts had been filled up of which several doctors were on deputation.

``About 80 dental students are admitted every year in Patiala and Amritsar and they are suffering due to acute shortage of staff,'' he said.

About 700 dental surgeons, who passed out from 10 dental colleges of the State every year, including private dental colleges, were hardly finding any placements in dental colleges, civil hospitals and health centres, he added.

The Punjab Government had failed to make any recruitment in the Departments of Medical Education and Research and Family welfare since 1998, he said, adding that most of this highly technical and qualified human resource therefore was seeking greener pastures abroad or have opted for odd jobs in the absence of any other option. - PTI.
