Six new marks set

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Four long standing records were among the six records that were set on the opening day of the 37th State Schools Aquatic meet at the Water Works Swimming pool here on Thursday. Sports Division trainees wrested the limelight from general school swimmers by accounting for four of the records.

Milan Kadukkattil of GHSS, Punkunnu was the cynosure of all eyes as he broke the 21-year-old record in senior boys 400m freestyle. Milan clocked 4:33.22 seconds to erase R.Kumar's old mark (4:48.05) set in 1985.

S. Sunil (Attingal) broke Shaji Joseph's 17-year-old record (2:47.08) by clocking 2:45.87s to win the gold in 200m breaststroke in the senior boys category. Another sports division ward S.V. Abhilash sunk a 17-year-old record in 200m butterfly in senior boys category. Abhilash clocked 2:23.16 second to better K. Saseendran's old mark (2:29.41) which was set in 1989.

M.R. Nithya entered the record books by bettering V. Remya's 11-year-old record in sub-junior girls 200m freestyle event.

The other records of the day were set by M.Thafeek (sub-junior boys 400m freestyle) and S.S. Sujithmon (junior boys 200m breast stroke).

Thiruvananthapuram leads the points tally with 97 points followed Attingal with 77 and Kangangad with eight points.
