`Condition of nomads appalling'

BIJAPUR: Balakrishna Renke, chairman of the National Commission for Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-nomadic Tribes, on Wednesday voiced concern over the poor standard of life of nomads in the district.

Mr. Renke, who visited some of the habitations of nomadic communities in the city and elsewhere in the district along with Lakshmibhai Patni and Lakshmichand, member and member-secretary of the commission respectively, told presspersons that though they stayed in particular places for years the nomads were denied even basic amenities. — Staff Correspondent

National conference

Manipal: The Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) will host the `Control Instrumentation System Conference' (CISCON) here on November 3 and 4.

Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, director of the institute S.S. Pabla said 100 delegates from different parts of the country would participate in the national conference. Pro-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education H.S. Ballal will inaugurate the conference.

Minister denies report

BIJAPUR: Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa has said the State has not given consent to the suggestion made by the Krishna Water Dispute Tribunal over building additional storage structures by Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh to utilise the floodwaters.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, he denied a report in a section of the press that Karnataka had agreed to the suggestion. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Swapna Rani Das, professor in History and social worker, Hubli, has been conferred the "Mahila Jyoti Award" instituted by the Integrated Development Council, Chennai. Former Governor of Orissa M.M. Rajendran conferred the award on her at a function held in Chennai recently.

Merchants' meeting

HUBLI: The Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry has convened a meeting of the retail and wholesale merchants of flowers and fruits on its premises in Hubli on Friday at 4 p.m., on the proposal to shift the wholesale and retail market of fruits and flowers at the Mahatma Gandhi Market in Hubli to APMC yard, Amargol.

Competition held

HUBLI: As many as 80 children participated in the fancy dress competition organised by the Rotaract Club of Hubli Mid-Town in Hubli on Wednesday as part of the Suvarna Karnataka celebrations. Two prizes were awarded in each of the four categories under which the competitions were held. Former Mayor Santosh Hirekerur inaugurated the programme. Honour for school

HUBLI: Railway High School, Hubli, has won the first place in the district-level Science Exhibition organised under the auspices of Department of Public Instruction, Dharwad, and Nirmala Takkar High School, Hubli, recently. The team from school comprising D. Stella and Ch. Esther Rani developed their exhibit "Multiple State Rocket" under the theme of transport and communication. Teacher R. Award for actor

PANAJI: Vision India, a Goa-based organisation which promotes national integration and co-operative movement, has decided to present "Bharat Vibhushan 2006" award to Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt for his lead role in the film "Lage Raho Munnabhai". Sushrut Martins, national convener of Vision India, declared the award on Tuesday.

Inaugurated

Sirsi: A week-long cultural programme christened "Kannada Habba-Sanskruti Suggi" on the eve of Suvarna Karnataka celebrations was inaugurated by Seer Raghaveshwar Bharati of Ramachandrapur Math, Hosanagar at the socio-cultural centre- `Sankalpa' at Yellapur near here on Wednesday to mark its 15th year. Pramod Hegde, chief of Sankalpa Samsthe, spoke. Seer Raghavendra Bharati felicitated former MLA Ansooya Sharma of Sirsi for her service to the region. The week-long programme includes Bharatanatya, rural songs, folk dance and felicitation of noted personalities. — Correspondent

Bangalore varsity reschedules exams

Bangalore: All undergraduate degree theory examinations of Bangalore University, which were scheduled to be held from November 6, have been rescheduled. The examinations will now be held from November 20. A detailed examination timetable had been sent to all colleges, a press release said. Practical examinations for the undergraduate degree courses will begin on November 10. — Staff Reporter

Bomb hoax at Legislators' Home

BANGALORE: An anonymous call on Thursday afternoon saying that a bomb had been planted at the Legislators' Home here turned out to be a hoax.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) G.B. Chebbi said that around 2 p.m. the staff at the Estate Officer's office at the Legislators' Home received the call saying that the bomb would explode at 3 p.m.

The police and members of the Bomb Detection Squad searched the premises with the help of sniffer dogs. No explosive was found.

Order on salary grants put on hold

Bangalore: The State Government had ordered the withholding of salary grants for 49 colleges that had not received B grade certification from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

The order has now been put on hold for a year, up to November 2007, according to a press release from the Bangalore University College Teachers Association

The association welcomed the move, but said it would only provide temporary relief. It has called for a permanent solution to the problem. — Staff Reporter

SFI jatha to begin today

Bangalore: The Students' Federation of India (SFI) is launching an all-India jatha in Bangalore on November 4 that will address issues of universal education, intellectual self-reliance and social justice.

In a press release here on Thursday, the SFI said it plans to collect five crore signatures to create awareness on these issues and submit it to the Prime Minister. The jatha will pass through Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Maharashtra and other States and culminate in Kerala. Another jatha, starting from Himachal Pradesh, will culminate in West Bengal. — Special Correspondent

Bijapur-Mumbai train frequency increased

HUBLI: South Western Railway has decided to increase the frequency of the CSTM (Mumbai)- Bijapur-CSTM (Mumbai) Fast Passenger (train nos. 1329/1330) from thrice a week to four times a week. The change will come into effect from December 6 at the Mumbai end and from December 7 at Bijapur. There will no change in arrival and departure times, a press release said.

The CSTM (Mumbai)-Bijapur Fast Passenger will run on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and the Bijapur-CSTM (Mumbai) Fast Passenger will run on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. — Staff Correspondent

BFW to set up German subsidiary

Bangalore: Bharat Fritz Werner (BFW), a Bangalore-based Rs. 200-crore company, will set up a fully owned subsidiary in Germany in the next quarter with an initial investment of Rs. 150 million. It will cater for the European market and provide employment for a mixed workforce. This expansion will add another 50 per cent growth to the company's turnover in the next fiscal year.

BFW will be the first prismatic machine tool manufacturer from India to go global said N.N. Upadhya, senior vice-president of the company. — Special Correspondent
