IFFI to get under way in Goa on November 23

Indian Panorama section to feature 20 films


  • Festival theme is `The whole world is one family'
  • Australian director Rolf de Heer to head four-member jury

    BANGALORE: The Goa Government, in association with the Entertainment Society of Goa, is all set to host the 37th International Film Festival of India on the theme "The whole world is one family," from November 23 to December 3.

    Goa Minister for Art and Culture Digambar Vasant Kamat told presspersons here on Thursday that the festival would feature 20 films, including Madhur Bhandarkar's Corporate, Rituparno Ghosh's Bengali film Dosar, Girish Kasaravalli's Kannada film Nayi Neralu, K. Satyanarayan's Telugu film Hope, Madhu Kaithapuram's Malayalam film Ekantham and Cheran's Dhavmai Dhavamirrunthu, in the Indian Panorama section.

    It would also screen six films in the non-feature section. The veteran actor Shashi Kapoor would inaugurate the festival, he said.

    Films of the late G. Aravindan, Prithviraj Kapoor and Sachin Deb Burman would be screened in the Retrospective section. A special screening of Richard Attenborough's Gandhi would be held to mark the centenary of the Satyagraha movement, he said.

    Homage

    The festival would pay homage to the late Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Nadira, Naushad, Rajkumar, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, P. Bhanumathi and Padmini by screening films in which they acted.

    Films from over 40 countries would be screened in the Cinema of the World section. Volver, starring Penelope Cruz, Babel, starring Brad Pitt, and a host of films from Asia, Africa and Latin America are in the race for the prestigious Golden Peacock award.

    Award-winning Australian director Rolf de Heer will head the four-member jury. Vincent Maraval and Olivier Assayas of France and the acclaimed Assamese director Jahnu Barua are the other members of the jury.

    Exclusive TV channel

    The IFFI will launch an exclusive television channel IFFI TV on the DTH platform for three weeks from November 18. It will provide details of the festival to subscribers, Mr. Kamat said.
