High Court to appoint law clerks

Staff Reporter

They will be paid a monthly honorarium of Rs. 6,000

BANGALORE: The State Government has approved the appointment of 20 law clerks-cum-research assistants in the Karnataka High Court for assisting judges in conducting research in law.

Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph told presspersons here on Thursday that the law clerks would be appointed, and they would be paid a monthly honorarium of Rs. 6,000. Steps were under way for selecting and appointing the clerks from January 1. As part of its golden jubilee celebrations, the High Court had set up a museum on its premises, which would house rare and important papers and judgments, he said.

Mr. Joseph said that the High Court had decided to present specially made wrist-watches to all its 1,504 employees in appreciation of their services.

Thanking the media for highlighting the celebrations, Mr. Cyriac Joseph said the High Court had been holding special sittings on the first and third Saturdays of every month from June to dispose of old cases, and 1,671 cases had been settled.

As many as 135 special Lok Adalats were held in the High Court, in which 471 cases were settled and Rs. 2.91 crore given as enhanced compensation.

The lower courts had conducted 1,379 Lok Adalats, in which 27,125 cases were decided and Rs. 26.63 crore given as compensation.

As part of the golden jubilee celebrations, seminars, workshops and felicitation functions were organised. The valedictory function would be held at Kanteerava Stadium on November 4, he said. When the celebrations commenced, the court had drawn up several schemes and all but one had been implemented, Mr. Joseph said.

The only programme not held was an interaction between judges and junior advocates as the Advocates Association of Bangalore had sought its postponement.
