Case admitted under Domestic Violence Act

Kanpur: A court here on Thursday admitted a case under the recently-enacted law on domestic violence, the first such instance in Uttar Pradesh, from a woman seeking maintenance from her estranged husband.

Chief Metropolitian Magistrate Ravindra Kumar has sought the enforcement of notification for the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, and fixed November 4 as the date for the further hearing, prosecution counsel Nand Lal Jaiswal said here.

The case was filed by Tripti Nigam, wife of software engineer Gaurav Nigam of Lucknow, on October 30 seeking Rs 50,000 from Gaurav as maintenance and permission to stay in his residences in Lucknow and Bangalore.

Ms. Nigam had earlier filed a complaint with the Gwaltoli police station here a few months ago alleging that her husband, his father Ved Prakash and mother Shobha had been harassing her for dowry.

Mr. Jaiswal said Tripti's in-laws could not be arrested as they had obtained a stay order from the High Court. - PTI.
