150 colleges, polytechnics to attend convention

CHENNAI: More than 150 colleges and polytechnics are expected to participate in the annual convention of the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to be held at the RMK Engineering College here on Saturday.

The theme of the daylong event is `Engineering Education in Retrospect and Prospect: A Systems Approach'.

It is being sponsored by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE); R.A. Yadav, vice chairman of the Council, will inaugurate the event.

R.S. Munirathnam, founder-chairman of the college, said that the convention would discuss how engineering education would have to change to meet the emerging challenges of economies like China. The changes in technology would also have to be reflected in a relevant syllabus. Currently, India was poised to become a hub for design and manufacturing and information technology, he said. The convention would also look at the role of technical institutions in enabling the poor to fulfil their needs and aspirations, said Chandrashekaran, the dean.

Parallel sessions will be held on themes like `Industry-Institute Interaction', `Knowledge Management', `System Evaluation' and `Requirements and Methodology' and some 85 papers would be presented. Teachers will also be felicitated.

Prasad Krishna, advisor, AICTE, will deliver the valedictory address on `Accreditation Process: Engineering and Polytechnic Colleges'.

The ISTE is a national society of teachers, students and administrators of engineering colleges that aims to impart technical information to its members. Its members total more than 2 lakh.
