MANGALORE: Being caught painting on walls in school would usually spell big trouble for students. But children at Chinmaya High School had a different experience on Thursday. Nearly 150 students were allowed to paint on a wall and were actively supported in the process. In a "bithi chithara beedhi shringara" programme held here, students coloured basic designs that had been marked out on the wall earlier. M.B. Puranik, president, Sharada Educational Institutions, who inaugurated the event said youngsters must be encouraged to pursue art. By forcing children to pursue engineering and medicine, we often killed the intrinsic artistic talent in many youngsters. It was essential that students interested in pursuing literature, music or art be allowed to do so, he said. Educational institutions must strive to ensure the overall development of a child. And such programmes were a step in the right direction, he said.
