Proposal to run express train

R. Rajaram

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi Railway Division sent a proposal to the Railway Board a month ago to operate an express train from Mayiladuthurai to Tirunelveli, via Madurai, in lieu of the passenger train that is being run currently.

Addressing the media here on Thursday, the Divisional Railway Manager, R.C. Jat, said that a proposal had also been sent to operate an early morning train from Tiruchi to Madurai.

Mr. Jat said that the Vriddhachalam - Salem BG project would be completed before the end of the current financial year.

In the Rs. 167-crore project, covering a distance 145.5 km, the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited was executing the work on the 56-km stretch from Attur to Salem.

The gauge conversion work between Tiruchi and Pudukottai, taken up as part of the Rs. 187.8-crore Tiruchi - Manamadurai project, via Karaikudi, had reached an advanced stage.

After inspection and clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), the authorities proposed to resume train services in the section from mid-December.
