Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim has asked the officials of the Mining and Geology Department to take stringent action to check unauthorised movement of mineral sand from Alappuzha and Kollam districts. Mr. Karim, who was addressing a meeting of district-level officials and senior officers of the directorate of the department here on Thursday, said the mineral sand was being transported regularly in lorries and boats from the districts. He directed the officials to check the vehicles and seize those transporting sand. The Minister also stressed the need to check the mining of lime shells without permit from the Vembanad Lake and its movement to Tamil Nadu and other places. He asked the officers not to harass the quarry owners when they collected royalty arrears from them on the directives of the Revenue Department. They should adopt a practical approach in order to ensure job security in the area and availability of material.
