Kochi: The School of Naval Oceanology and Meteorology (SNOM) of Southern Naval Command headed by Commander C.S. Panda celebrated its 21st anniversary on Wednesday. From a humble beginning as Met Training Section in June 1968 the school has grown in stature and christened as School of Naval Oceanology and Meteorology on November 1, 1985. The school is presently conducting 80 courses on an average for officers, sailors and with a longest duration of one year for officers and six months for sailors. Around 300 officers and 1,500 sailors are trained every year. The school, equipped with latest instruments to train personnel in meteorology and oceanography, has been recognised as `Centre of Excellence for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences' by Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). Three courses of officers' and two courses of sailors' have been recognised as M.Phil., M.Tech, M.Sc., B.Sc. and Diploma respectively. Students from CUSAT and scientists from NPOL also undergo training at the school. The function was attended by Cmde Mahitosh Misra, Principal Director Naval Oceanology and Meteorology, Cmde Van Haltren, Chief Staff Officer, Training Southern Naval Command and other senior officers and sailors.
