KOCHI: The city corporation has asked non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and residents' associations in the city to submit project proposals for setting up decentralised solid-waste treatment units. The decision was taken at a meeting of representatives of residents' associations and civic administrators here on Wednesday. Meetings of residents' associations, Kudumbasree units and NGOs will have to be convened within three days and a decision taken on the suitable processing method. The proposals will have to be routed through the Health Officer to the corporation. A circle-level monitoring committee will be formed to evaluate the progress of the schemes, the meeting decided. The civic body will extend assistance for setting up biogas plants and vermi-compost units. Bank support The Union Bank of India branches in the city will extend financial assistance to these plants and units approved by the corporation. Funds will not be a problem, as the bank feels that it is a social movement, which will benefit society, said M.P. Verghese, Assistant General Manager of the bank. In his inaugural address, Minister for Fisheries S. Sharma said concerted efforts were required for keeping the city clean. Mayor Mercy Williams called upon city dwellers to contribute their mite for cleaning up the city. Presentations on waste treatment plants and methods were made. S. Balakrishnan, president, Ernakulam District Residents' Apex Committee, spoke.
