NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Science and Technology has come to the rescue of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi which is struggling to curb the menace of illegal constructions in the Capital. It has deployed a state-of-the-art system in the civic body's City Zone office that uses high-resolution satellite imagery and spatial multi-media mapping to build a three-dimensional (3D) geographical information system (GIS) covering 20 sq km of the highly congested Chandni Chowk area here. Giving a live demonstration of the project here, Union Science, Technology and Earth Sciences Minister Kapil Sibal said the use of satellite imagery and multi-media technologies allows mapping of urban structures with emphasis on building elevation. By supplementing the conventional satellite imagery with video, photographs and field surveys, the system could be used for a number of applications, he added. Stating that this pilot project was being monitored to evaluate the use of the advanced integrated technologies in the Indian context and to assess its use as a tool to help in management of a metropolis like Delhi, Mr. Sibal said multiple technologies like high resolution satellite imagery, vehicle-borne and static laser systems, Global Positioning System (GPS) and other attribute information collected from door-to-door surveys would be utilised for making a comprehensive three-dimensional database.
