NEW DELHI: The honorary degree being conferred on Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit by Delhi University at a special convocation this coming Saturday seems to have got a section of the University teachers up in arms. Strongly opposing the decision, the National Democratic Teachers' Front (NDTF) has accused the University of trying to "flatter" a political personality. "Ms. Dikshit does not deserve it at all. I can't understand why she is being given the degree. The sole qualification she has for being honoured is that she is the Chief Minister. To bestow the degree on her would be to belittle other people who are also getting the degree," charged NDTF president Awanijesh Awasthy. Arguing that all colleges run by Delhi Government are in hired buildings with "practically little or no infrastructure", Dr. Awasthy said: "This decision was taken by previous Vice-Chancellor Deepak Nayyar, but it should have been debated again when the present Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental took over. To confer the degree on her, especially after the sealing episode, is really making a mockery of the degree." The NDTF has planned a meeting of all its members on Friday to take a decision on how to take their protest forward. Delhi University will also confer degrees on C.N.R. Rao, R.K. Laxman and Amitabh Bachchan at the special convocation.
