Nagapattinam
Staff Reporter
NAGAPATTINAM: Widespread rain has been reported from several parts of the Cauvery delta region of Nagapattinam district since Thursday night. The average rainfall was about 50 mm at several places. The standing samba paddy crops planted a fortnight ago are submerged in Thalainayar, Sirkazhi, Mayiladuturai and Kollidam areas. However, no damage has been reported from the district as the water that submerged paddy fields four days ago receded completely. A senior official of the Agriculture Department said on Friday that transplantation of samba paddy crop would be completed in a week. The department took steps to cultivate the crop in the normal area of 1.03 lakh hectares. Besides, thaladi paddy crop would also be cultivated in about 30,000 hectares in the areas where kuruvai paddy harvest was completed.
Shelters inundated
The rain inundated several tsunami temporary shelters in Serudur, Pazhayar and Velankanni areas. Local authorities are now draining out the water.
