PERMIT PROBLEM: The buses impounded by the Transport department in Chennai on Friday.
CHENNAI:
Transport department officials on Friday seized and impounded four buses that were being operated as contract carriages for a private engineering college without relevant permits.
The vehicles were being used for transporting students and staff of SSN College of Engineering on Old Mahabalipuram Road, the department officials said.
A team of Motor Vehicle Inspectors led by K. Mohanram, Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement), seized the vehicles after receiving specific information.
The authorities said they would investigate as to how long the vehicles were being operated without the required documents.
Any contract carriage vehicle has to pay Rs. 3,000 a quarter per seat. All the four seized vehicles had a capacity of 55 seats. So, the evasion of permit fee for each vehicle came to about Rs. 1.65 lakh a quarter, they said.
The seized buses belonged to a private travel company and one of them did not have even a Fitness Certificate.
