THRISSUR: The first meeting of the reconstituted Kerala Lalitkala Akademi, presided by chairman C.N. Karunakaran, on Friday nominated five governing council members. They are Lizzie Jacob, Balamuralikrishnan, Joseph M. Varghese, C.S. Jayaram and Manoj Vailur, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Body found

THRISSUR: The body of a 35-year-old woman was found in the well of her house at Mullakkara near Mannuthi on Friday. The police identified the deceased as Sunita, wife of Meppurath Raghu of Mullakkara. Local people alleged that they were suspicious about the cause of the death. — Staff Reporter

Youth deported

NEDUMBASSERY: A youth from Nepal, who had left for Kuwait from Delhi, was deported to the Cochin International Airport on the ground that he had a fake visa. Kedhar Sharma, 24, flew to Kuwait from the Delhi airport on a Jazeera Airways flight on Wednesday. He was deported the next day. The usual practice is for the airlines to take the person back to the point of boarding, which, in this case, is the Delhi airport. — A Correspondent

Award for Achuthanunni

THRISSUR: Chathanathu Achuthanunni, former head of Calicut University's Department of Malayalam, has been selected for the Vachaspathi Award for 2006, instituted by the Kadavallur Anyonya Parishad, in recognition of his contribution to Sanskrit and Malayalam languages and literature. The award, which carries a purse of Rs.5,000, citation and plaque, was decided by a committee comprising poet Akkitham, Pallippadu and Devaki Moossad. The award, instituted in memory of T.C. Parameswaran Moossad (`Amaram Parameswari', `Thriveni'), will be presented during this year's Kadavallur Anyonyam. Dr. Achuthanunni is the author of several scholarly works, including `Dhvanya Lokavum Lochanavum', `Vakrokti Jeevitham', `Bharateeya Sahitya Darsanam' and `Kavikandabharanam', according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Award for Adenwallah

THRISSUR: H.S. Adenwallah, professor emeritus in Plastic Surgery with the Jubilee Mission Medical College and Research Institute here, has been selected for the Prof. Joseph McCarthy Award, instituted by the New York-based organisation Smile Train.

The award will be presented at a function at Four Seasons Hall in New York on November 4. Dr. Adenwallah, who has been serving at the Institute for 48 years, holds the world record in surgical correction of cleft lip and palate, according to a press release.

Panikkar to head education panel

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has set up a Higher Education Commission with the former Vice-Chancellor of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit K.N. Panikkar as chairman. Thomas Joseph is the member secretary. Its has been asked to list the constitutional responsibilities and recommend the mode of functioning of the proposed Higher Education Council . It has also been asked to draft a model law for the purpose. The Commission has been asked to submit its report within three months. — Special Correspondent

CJI to visit Ernakulam tomorrow

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Y.K. Sabarwal will be in Ernakulam on November 5. He will return to Delhi the same afternoon. — Special Correspondent

Interest revision

Thiruvananthapuram: Credit societies and banks in the cooperative sector have made an upward revision in the interest on fixed deposits. The new rates have retrospective effect from October 25. — Special Correspondent

Bail plea rejected

KOCHI: A court in Kerala on Friday dismissed the bail application of Akbar Raj, arrested on the charge of sending an e-mail threatening the President and Prime Minister. Judicial First Class Magistrate Sarat Chandran dismissed the bail plea and extended his judicial remand till November 17. Raj had stated in his bail petition that he was undergoing treatment and blamed his former lover and her relatives for his plight. He was arrested on October 28, four days before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Kerala. - PTI
