Call for protection of Palani hills

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Save Kurinji Campaign Council on Tuesday demanded that the shola forests in Tamil Nadu adjacent to the recently declared Kurinjimala Sanctuary in Kerala be declared a protected area.

In a memorandum to Forest Minister Benoy Viswom, the council urged the Minister that he should press his Tamil Nadu counterpart for declaration of the area a sanctuary or a national park during the southern Forest Ministers' conference to he held here on November 3 and 4. Council secretary G. Rajkumar said Kerala had actually preserved a watershed of about 8,000 acres for Tamil Nadu by establishing the Kurinjimala Sanctuary.

Much of the water from these areas flowed down to Tamil Nadu. It was nearly equivalent to the drainage from the 8,000 acres leased to Tamil Nadu at Mullaperiyar.

It was water from these areas that fed the Amaravati river and kept it perennial. Much of the shola forests and grasslands in the Kodaikanal and Palani hills had been destroyed by plantations.
